Last Thursday I had the opportunity to meet with a small and local law firm called Law Offices of Bateh and Clark. The firm is located in Jacksonville’s historic San Marco district and specializes in family law, personal injury law, estate planning, business law, as well as traffic citations. I met with the managing partner of the firm Abraham Bateh who was kind enough to tell me the story of his firm’s soon to be thirty year history in Jacksonville. Abraham had attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate studies and later received his law degree from Stetson University located in DeLand Florida. Abraham recalled that he’d wanted to be an attorney since he was in 8th grade, and since that day he spent the next few years formulating a game plan to accomplish that goal.
Abraham’s law firm opened on July 1st 1988 and even though his firm is small, with a total of four employees, his team serves the legal needs of 400 clients on a yearly basis. And while the firm specializes in many areas, 70 % of their cases are in the realm of family law and personal injury. Abraham told me that the most difficult cases are those within the family law category which involve two parents who are trying to establish majority timeshare or custody of their shared children because these circumstances typically involve a great degree of emotion. Personal injury cases can also be tough because a “burden of proof” needs to be established by the plaintiff to prove a certain degree of negligence that resulted in the plaintiff’s direct injury. Even though Abraham and his business partner Charles Bateh are licensed throughout the state of Florida, the majority of their cases come from St. Johns, Duval, Clay, Nassau, and Baker County.
The firm stays involved in the community by sponsoring the San Jose Athletic Association, donating to the Wounded Warrior Project and Dreams Come True, as well as providing probono services to the Jacksonville Legal Aid. Abraham is a a diehard Gators fan and holds season tickets, he’ll also visit the campus to catch the occasional baseball, basketball, and softball games. In addition he likes to catch the occasional Jaguars games when possible at Everbank Field. He also loves spending time with his three kids and attending their sporting events. Abraham stays involved in the Jacksonville Bar Association and Jacksonville Justice Association which is a nonprofit organization of civil trial lawyers. A fun piece of local San Marco trivia is that their office is located in one of San Marco’s oldest buildings still standing today.
