Dining Hawaiian Style in Jax

Jimmy Hula's Jacksonville FL story by Mike Kuusela

Last Wednesday I was exploring Jacksonville’s restaurant scene and decided to visit a local joint that I must have driven by at least a dozen times in the past. With an inviting sign hung above it’s exterior, I thought that this place may have a fun story to tell. I ventured inside and got in touch with Lisa Stichter, the local franchise owner of Jimmy Hula’s on Atlantic Blvd in Jacksonville and the Blanding Blvd location in Orange Park.

Lisa told me that she had opened the restaurant in February of 2015. She had originally been introduced to the brand through her son Perry, who had worked with the brand in the Orlando market while attending college at UCF. She had the opportunity to visit the Jimmy Hula’s in Orlando on many occasions and, “just fell in love with the brand”. Lisa told me that the restaurant’s menu stays consistent throughout the year and that their customers love the Aloha Burgers and Voodoo Fish Tacos which are some of the restaurant’s top sellers. Jimmy Hula’s does feature a kids menu affectionally referred to as the “little dudes” menu. Some of the items on this menu include options such as tacos, quesadillas, and kids chicken tenders. On average the restaurant serves approximately 600 customers a day.

The restaurant brings with it a very chill, island cool feeling with reggae music playing in the air. The interior bares a design resembling that of a surf shack on a tropical beach island meant to carry the customer away to a place of relaxation and enjoyment. This has been one of the only area restaurants that I’ve personally been to that carries Hawaii’s Kona beer on draft. Jimmy Hula’s also has a wide variety of IPAs, lagers, ales, and wheat & fruit beers to choose from.

Jimmy Hula’s stays involved with the local North Florida community by sponsoring the JFC soccer youth league for kids eighteen and under at Jacksonville’s Patton Park. The restaurant also features an outdoor dining area where the restaurant’s customers are welcome to bring their dogs to. The restaurant also offers on premise pickup catering and there are plans to expand the franchise in the Jacksonville area within the next two years.
