As I walked the streets of Jacksonville’s San Marco neighborhood earlier today I passed by a business that got my attention and sparked my interest so I decided to venture inside. When I walked through the door I was welcomed by Geri Bernard, the owner of Painting With A Twist in San Marco. Geri was gracious enough to make time for me in her schedule, even though I had just walked in to her place of business in the spur of the moment.
As we began to talk I found out that Painting With A Twist is a franchise business and that Geri had started off as an artist with the company at their St. Pete location a few years ago. Geri and her brother Josh moved to the Jacksonville market to open the San Marco and Fleming Island locations as they are both natives of North Florida. Geri had attended FSU and studied fine arts while her brother had attended UF and studied business, the two back grounds complemented each other in mirror fashion for this type of business model which in turn sparked the idea to open up the two franchise locations in North Florida.
Geri designed the interior space with an eclectic charm in mind in hopes to create a fun and creative environment for her clientele. Painting With A Twist permits their patrons to bring their own beer, wine, or other refreshments as well as food to enjoy while painting a wide variety of subjects. Painting With A Twist also partners with several local non-profits twice a month through their “Painting With a Purpose” program where half of the evenings proceeds go to a selected cause. Previous beneficiaries of this program have included Live for Today, Jacksonville ZOO Keepers, Foodies Care, and Pit Sisters.
Painting with a Twist also features summer programs for kids who wish to develop their creative side. The kids summer classes can be done on an individual day or full week basis. Classes are for ages 5+ and a full week will run $200 while the daily program runs $45. There are various perks with the kids classes such as craft, take home painting, snacks, and gallery shows at end of the week (call for more details on this.)
The studio space is large enough to accommodate 40 painters and there is a private exterior studio which will hold up to fifteen for private artistic events. Painting With A Twist does offer various promotional deals which vary via location but these include discounts for senior citizens 55+, military personnel, and a “Manic Monday” special where patrons receive $10 off the class. A typical adult class will range in between two to three hours and includes a 16×20 canvas as well as acrylic paints during the class.
